Your Role as a Service Provider for Animals: What You Do to Respond to Animal Cruelty and Address the Connection to Violence

Animal cruelty is a painful topic. However, acknowledging it as reality is also acknowledging that something must be done in order to prevent it. It’s safe to say, we’ve all learned the hard way once or twice that ignoring a problem does not make it go away.

Animal cruelty is often an indicator of additional violence occurring. At the very least it is a red flag that the cruelty toward the animal could escalate to cruelty to people as well. If you are working somewhere where you deal with animals it is important to recognize this red flag and to recognize that not only may you be facing an abused animal, but also an abused person.

Many abusers use their victims' pets as a means of control. When working with a pet owner whose pet shows signs of abuse, keep in mind that the person in front of you may not be the abuser. You are in a position to provide choices for safety.

  • Ask non-judgmental questions: Individuals with trauma do not easily trust. Being compassionate and non-judgmental can go a long way.

  • Are you and your pet safe in your current home?

  • Has anyone ever tried to harm you or your pet?

  • I notice that your pet is showing signs of abuse, can you tell me more?

  • I am a mandated reporter for animal abuse, but I can provide information for safe shelters for you and your pet if that is something you are interested in?

Inform and Educate: If not addressed, domestic violence can lead to serious injury and fatalities for the pet and the owner.
