"How Dr. Jessica Teague Practices Empathetic Pet Care Through Active Listening"

This week we had the incredible opportunity to speak to an inspirational and compassionate veterinarian who gave us a glimpse into her world and the huge need in our community.

Dr. Teague is the veterinarian at Seven Hills Veterinary in Loveland. She has been practicing in Ohio since 2016. She and her daughter have three rescue dogs, a rescue kitty, and a bunny. Dr. Teague is an advocate for not only her patients, but their human families too.

Dr. Teague receives calls weekly from clients reaching out for help with their pets due to falling on hard times. Some clients have lost their homes due to rent increasing. Veterans have come in struggling with mental health concerns and being on a fixed income, finances are tight. Some clients are struggling with health concerns and the high cost of ongoing medical treatment and vet expenses. With the onset of the pandemic, Dr. Teague encountered increased numbers of clients experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, addiction, depression, and PTSD. In all of these encounters, their pets were a big reason they were holding on to hope.

Dr. Teague said the stress that people are facing often comes out as anger that gets turned onto vets. This is because people love their pets and they are desperate for help, but resources are limited and costs are high. Dr. Teague shared that when she listens to people and understands where they are coming from they are so thankful. They are just wanting to be heard and understood.

Q&A

Why did you become a vet?

  • I have always been drawn to animals. I love that I can work with them and have a connection without having to say anything.

What is your biggest concern?

  • Overpopulation and its effects on the welfare of animals. Shelters are overcrowded, there are strays without homes, and many animals are being mistreated.

What is your biggest challenge?

  • Finding affordable options for each person, especially with costs going up.

What is your favorite part?

  • Teaching people how to help their pet to be happy and healthy. I love to teach and always assume that people don’t know what they don’t know when it comes to pet health and care.
